Short story :The winner
Hello everyone, I'm back with a short story that I wrote while solving a past paper.
The question was: "write about an occasion when you discovered you could do something you had been afraid of doing before" so have a read at what I wrote:
"Laiba, Laiba" I turned around as I heard my sports trainer calling me, "What," I asked nervously. I don't know why, but the sight of her always made me feel nervous.
"You know, Abiha is on leave these days, so we'll need someone to participate in the hurdle race practice" she paused to take a breath, and my tension increased.
"So I've picked you" she finished confirming my worst fears:
I was never good at sports activities, especially running I used to fall down amid every trial like a total loser, and everyone used to laugh at me, and what was worse, after some time they started calling me "Laiba, the loser" that was the point I decided to quit thinking I was actually a loser, and it had been nearly three years since I hadn't participated in any sports activities especially running.
But my new sports trainer had been trying to convince me to participate in sports activities, but every time, I somehow used to wriggle away, but this time I had a feeling that I was caught badly, and I won't be able to get away.
"Uhh, me" I stammered,
"Yes, you," she smiled at me,
"Why don't you pick Maham she's an excellent runner," I suggested trying to sound cheerful,
"Well, but she's also absent today, so you'll have to participate anyway," she said decidedly and began to walk away when I tried to make another attempt,
"But miss, I'm feeling quite dizzy today, and my legs are also paining," I said,
"Well, are you not feeling well," she asked,
"Yes, yes miss," I said hoping she would accept my excuse,
"Then maybe I should take you to the nurse, come," she said holding my hand
"Uhh, no, no thanks", I said quickly,
"Then show up on the tracks after the break, and if you don't I shall come to get you," she said with a note of sternness in her tone that I detected immediately, and thought it better to follow her instructions.
The bell rang, announcing break time.
All the students came running out of their classrooms, like prisoners freed from their prison.
I too stepped out of my classroom and was proceeding toward my usual bench when I caught my sports trainer signaling me from across the playground, toward the tracks where other participants were also gathering.
"The trials were supposed to be after the break, then why is she calling me now," I thought as I proceeded toward her.
"We are holding the trials right now as you have your additional science class after the break,'' she explained. I noticed she was in a pretty bright mood, so I decided to make a last attempt at slipping away from this affliction.
"Miss, I'm telling you that I'm not at all a good runner, you can even ask the others, they'll tell you what a stupid runner I have been in the past," I said,
"But I've never seen you run, and I want to once, and maybe this time it's different," she said setting up the hurdles,
"You probably want to see me laughed at," I thought bitterly.
"Now, all of you line up" she ordered.
I was already standing on the tracks, so I didn't bother to move.
The sight of the track that stretched on, made me feel nauseatic, and the hurdles placed on it at intervals, were building up the feeling even more.
"Now, at my whistle, 3,2,1," and she blew the whistle.
I started running along with my associates, and the alarm constantly rang in my mind that I'd fall any moment.
I conquered half part of the track, and to my surprise, I even crossed the hurdles and reached the end line first.
I didn't know what had I done until I heard my trainer clapping and cheering it dawned upon me that I had won the trials.
I turned around to see my trainer beaming at me proudly, "Well, I have seen you run for the first minute and I'm proud to say that you're an excellent one, maybe the best one in your class," she said patting me gently on the back.
In the next few trials, I proved myself a surprisingly fast runner and considering my talents, my trainer selected me for the final hurdle race instead of Abiha, my classmates too changed my nickname
from "Laiba, the loser", to "Laiba, the runner".
And the most important thing to me was that it helped me break my long-formed belief that I wasn't a good runner.
